Day 43 Beach, ND to Glendive, MONTANA

July 9, 2014

42.6 miles
2:28 ST
17.2 avg

Last night when Jarid and Staci were leaving, we walked outside with them and couldn't believe how much smoke there was. Jarid said it was from some forest fires in Canada. We weren't very excited about riding in that today, but by the time we left this morning, much of it had moved out.

Then...wait for it...wait for it...

Six weeks (today) after leaving the Gulf, we're back in Montana! If it didn't hurt so much to get up, I would've gotten down and kissed the ground.

Then about 11 miles down the road, we had flat #8. We've been having a very slow leak over the past few days, and it finally gave way. Gerry found a wire in the tire.
I really hope this is the last picture like this that I post.

Today was much different than the last six riding days: we actually had a slight tailwind. Plus, we lost about 600 feet in elevation. It was also shorter because of how we're having to break up the days according to distance between towns.

Coming into Glendive is very pretty, a different kind of pretty than what we're accustomed to at home.

We dropped Bob off at the motel and rode to the grocery store, a couple miles down into town. When we were riding back, we saw Jim and Shawn and Tim riding the other way. (They're the cyclists that were at the B&B with us the other night.) Then we caught up to another rider and stopped to talk with him for a few minutes. Turns out he's staying just down the hall from us. He was going to meet Jim, Shaun and Tim for dinner tonight and invited us. We would've loved to join them, but thought it best for me to give my shin as much rest time as possible.

During the afternoon we talked with Dave at XL Country radio in Bozeman (He said he'll play the segment tomorrow.), Gerry washed our clothes, and I sat with ice on my shin.

Then my brother, Tracy, and his friend, Shawn, stopped by on their way back to work in ND. It was wonderful to see family!

We tried a selfie with the Kindle, but my arms aren't quite long enough.

We're taking tomorrow off to give my shin some down time. Looking at the wind forecast, it's supposed to be SW tomorrow, the direction we have to ride to Miles City. We'd rather not do 76+ miles into a headwind. The next day it's supposed to shift to NE, exactly what we'll need. Whether or not it actually works out like that remains to be seen.

Thank you for staying faithful to pray us home. Prayer for healing for our shins is especially desired right now (Gerry's is still sore, also.)

"Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a good conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably on all things. And I urge you all the more to do this, so that I may be restored to you all the sooner."      Hebrews 13:18-19

Getting closer,
Pat
