We decided to ride on with "the click". We haven't seen anything different in how the bike rides, shifts, brakes, etc., so we're going on. The skies are dark to the east and south, breaking clouds in the west and some blue in the north, so we headed out highway 312 toward Huntley. This was a decent road with little traffic and courteous drivers.
At Worden, we stopped for a "real" breakfast of pancakes (vs oatmeal and bagels) at Kit Kat's. Kit (or Kat) seemed almost a little perturbed that we interrupted her clean up from the morning rush.
We continued on past Pompey's Pillar (doesn't seem that impressive in real life),
to Custer where we stopped for another break after 24 miles. This was a great road to ride: we encountered only two cars and six trucks with horse trailers. At Custer, we visited with a man and his wife at their convenience store about his days at U of M, about their daughter and son-in-law who ride bicycle. He was a portly man, enjoyable to talk with as he sat there with his legs splayed out, greeting everyone who came in the door.
I don't know what was going on today, but for once I was hotter than Gerry! I kept shedding shirts then jacket and Gerry kept his on. THAT is totally opposite from what we usually experience. It's not the H word, is it??
When we were 1/4 mile from the Hysham exit, I felt the tire go soft. Yup... our second flat. We were only 2 1/4 miles from town and trying to outrun the rainclouds behind us. Well, nothing else we can do but change it. That involves unhooking the trailer, unhooking the drum brake, then taking off the back tire. Gerry pulled out a 1" radial tire wire, replaced the tube, put everything back together and we were on our way again. (That sounds simple and quick; it took 40 minutes.) During the process, a highway patrolman stopped to check on us, which was encouraging.
We rode almost the whole day in a "corridor" of good weather with clouds all along the south and blue on the north. When we got into Hysham, the wind was picking up and the clouds were closer and darker. We talked with a lady on the street who said there was a severe thunderstorm watch for the evening, so we opted out of the city park camping and sought out the Hysham Motel instead.
We dropped off BOB (the trailer) and scooted over to the "grocery store" for some fruit and bread. Keep in mind that this is a small enterprise where they go over to Forsyth, pick up groceries to stock the shelves here at about 300% markup.
I got a kick out of the movie theater, especially the movie they were showing: "The Sons of Katie Elder".
In addition to the "mystery click", Gerry's cleat developed a squeak today. It took two lubings to take care of that one.
We were glad to be inside a dry room when the rainstorm hit. Thunder and lightning are not much fun when you're in a tent.
