Day 9 - Rock Creek to Garrison, MT

ROCK CREEK TO GARRISON, MT
52.3 miles

Hey, let's ride the frontage road - it will be nice to get away from the traffic. Uh-huh. But we forgot about the hills that usually accompany a road that runs between a river and the mountains. After about the 7th climb - some of them in the rain - we were glad to get off that road at Drummond. Even though the sun came out as we reached town, we had burned too much energy so decided that today was a "lunch in" day (versus "lunch out" which has typically been bagels w/peanut butter, fruit, and maybe a trail bar at a stop by the roadside). We chatted with several people in the little cafe who were quite interested in the ride and the setup we have.

Miles down the road, the clouds started chasing us again. As they got closer and closer, we pedaled faster and faster. The wind picked up, we felt a splatter now and then. The wind picked up, and picked up....and pushed us right up that last little hill into Garrison! It was amazing, and a little scary. One minute we were grinding in granny gear and the next we couldn't pedal fast enough to move the bike, because the wind was.

We hustled down the off ramp and around the curve to the little mercantile there. Just as we pulled the bike under the porch overhang, the hail hit. Thank you, Lord! We took shelter for over an hour waiting for a let up, realizing that we weren't going any further today. We knew there was an RV park just across the way about a half mile, but we didn't relish the thought of setting up the tent in the rain.

Eventually, Jerry the store owner (an interesting, eccentric character), casually mentioned that he thought they had little camping cabins at the park. We called over and, sure enough, they had one open and it was only $5 more than a tent site! Yahoo, we'll take it! We jumped on the bike and sprinted over. It doesn't look like much, but let me tell you, it was dry and that's all we needed. It had a bunk bed with mattresses, a small table and a heater. With our sleeping bags and our own food, it was the Hilton to us! An added bonus is that Riverfront RV Park is owned by a brother in the Lord and Gerry spent some good time fellowshiping with him that evening.

Tomorrow - our last major pass. It's time for a good night's sleep.
