We left the motel at 9:20, heading out hwy 20 east. It was a good road with a nice shoulder. After a few miles it turned into four lane, with a rumble strip in the shoulder. But that doesn’t bother us so much when there’s four lanes because vehicles tend to pull over more readily.
A nice tailwind pushed us along so we made good time to Fremont. When we got to the edge of the city we came onto controlled access. We didn’t see any signs saying we couldn’t ride so we continued on. At one point, we rode right by a highway patrol station. I thought, “They might catch a glimpse of us out the window and come "scold" us.” But we made it to our exit without incident.
We were at 30 miles so we stopped for a break, pulling into some shade at the front of a small overhead door and window business. Just as we were walking the bike to the front of the building, the door opened up, startling us. It being Sunday, we weren’t expecting anyone to be around.
We were warmly greeted and quickly in conversation and fellowship with a brother in the Lord! It didn’t take long for the bond of the Spirit to be evident.
We talked about God’s grace and work in our lives,
About coming to Christ,
About marriage (He’s still madly in love with his wife of 25 years and spoke highly of her!),
About owning a small business,
About bicycling (He’s ridden from Vermont to here and still rides a lot.),
About children and grandchildren.
His wife, Olivia, arrived after a while and we enjoyed talking with her also. She asked if we were hungry and invited us to their church picnic. We still had 23+ miles to go, so had to decline. After about an hour, it was time to leave and we were blessed with a short time of prayer together.
We can’t even express how much an encounter like this means to us. God has been giving them to us when we’re in great need of them. Their names are Dale and Olivia Booska in Fremont, OH. He asked for prayer that he would be able to find some good, dependable, responsible employees for his business which is very busy right now. (I kicked myself later for not getting their picture.)
The road from there to Sandusky had a narrower shoulder, but almost everyone was very courteous and pulled over to the other lane as they passed. It was along here that we saw the second strangest object that we've ever seen while riding. A complete toilet was lying in the ditch. How do you lose a toilet? (The other strange thing was a wheelchair.)
There have been a couple days when it’s felt like BOB is feeling a little heavy. At first, I thought it had to do with the two day food supply we’d just picked up. But now I’m wondering if he’s exhibiting some jealousy over the comments we get about Silver Streak as we pass. “Nice bike!” “Cool bike!” No one ever says anything about him, so I’m thinking he’s acting out by dragging something.
We got to Sandusky about 1:30, checked the KOA and two or three motels within walking distance of Cedar Point. There was a KOA campground, but they didn't have any Kamping Kabins available, which we needed to secure the bike while we would be gone all day. We ended up at a moderate "dive".
After checking in, we took BOB off and rode about three miles to the nearest Meijer to pick up some food for the next three days.
We were walking down one of the aisles when a man walked up behind us and asked, “Are you really from Bozeman?” (We had on our RAAM jerseys.) As we talked for several minutes, we learned he’s from Helena. Before he left, he gave us some money for the scholarship fund. He offered to come get us and take us to the park tomorrow and his sister offered the same or the use of her van. He said they’re going to the park on Tuesday, so I said we might give him a call to pick us up on their way.
When we got back to the motel, we changed and went to the pool. (Surprisingly, the pool is very nice and clean.) It was quite refreshing for how hot we were.
Tomorrow.....coasters!!
