Today is two months from the day we started this journey. In some ways it’s hard to believe it’s gone this fast. In other ways it’s feeling like we’ve been away from home for a long, long time and I’m really missing “our people”!
It was 3:18 this morning when the neighbors announced their arrival back at their room. Thankfully, they quieted down pretty quickly.
Then sometime a little later, my chronic back muscle spasm kicked in big time when I turned to my side. I finally managed to get back to sleep after returning to my back, even though it was still hurting.
At 6:42 we were awakened by someone walking the row of rooms and banging on each door yelling something about getting up. Fisherman!
After a sparse oatmeal breakfast we gladly rolled away at 8:15. It’s hard to believe, but the skies are actually blue and there is no rain forecast for the day.
We pointed east on hwy 49 along the northside of Lake Oneida. It was good riding: nice shoulder, pretty lake views, rolling hills.
At North Bay we stopped for a short break by the fire station. A car came barreling in and stopped and the lady rolled down her window with a big smile. “Where are you headed?” We told her and talked for a couple minutes. She said she rides also and Gerry asked her where all she’s ridden. RAGBRAI and mostly around this area. She asked if we were staying in the area tonight, and if so, she’d take us home with her! That made our day.
At Rome, we tried to hook back up with the bike route 5. We carefully looked at the map, but either we missed something or the map is mismarked. We ended up on a controlled access where bicycles are prohibited. We had no choice but to ride it until the first exit at Oriskany, which was five or six miles. At that point, we dropped down to 69 and rode it to Utica – downtown Utica.(Not exactly what we had planned)

After showers, we loaded the dirty laundry and walked to the shopping plaza. We stopped at the dollar store where I picked up a tank top to wear while all my clothes were being washed. At the laundromat, I put the shirt on and Gerry found a huge shirt in the lost and found basket and put that on while our clothes washed. We were a sight: me in my bike shorts and black tank, Gerry in his bike shorts and huge, baggy t-shirt.
When the clothes were finished, we changed to become presentable and went to the grocery store. We came out with four bags of groceries and a pizza!
We must’ve been something to behold as we walked back with four bags of groceries, a laundry bag and a pizza. But, hey, that pizza tasted SO good! We ate the WHOLE thing!
It didn’t take very long before I was ready for a nap. I slept for about two hours, waking up at 9:20 - just in time for bed! ;o)
