The day started out quite nicely. We got up about 6:30, had some breakfast, loaded everything and left at 7:25.
It had rained in the night and the streets were still damp, but it wasn’t raining now.
We stopped at the corner on main street where Dale had pointed out the four churches, one on each corner. He said there’s only one other place in the U.S. that has that (he thought in Ohio somewhere).

It was overcast, again, (sigh) but cool, which was nice. The riding was good and we rolled along pretty smoothly, taking a break at Clyde.
When we rode through Savannah, we saw some familiar fields: potatoes. And we saw a sign that said their Potato Festival is in September.
At Port Byron, we stopped for a break and to give the rain in front of us time to move on. A short distance up the road we hit wet roads; so much for the clean bike.
When the sun finally came out, it felt like a sauna with all the humidity in the air.
At 11:30 we took another break at Baldwinsville -60 miles- and decided to push on because the skies were looking okay. We stopped at Wegmans grocery store in Euclid to pick up some fruit and pita bread. We decided not to get snacks here but to pick them up later at Cicero (bad decision).

But…when we got to Cicero, where we were planning to stay, we didn’t see any campgrounds or motels or stores. We stopped and asked and found out that the nearest motel was back a half mile and up another road a couple miles. So off we went, with the clouds getting closer and darker.
This was pretty frustrating because when we were expecting several motels at Cicero.
About two miles up the road we saw one motel and passed on it – yuk. Another mile up the road the next one looked a little better and we pulled in as the rain drops were starting.
A pink-haired gal in a tight skirt and top and rainbow colored eye shadow came to the desk. She felt quite bad when she had to tell us that she had no rooms. No rooms and it was starting to rain harder. She called up to Joni at the next nearest place, four miles, to see if there was a room there. There was and we took off in the rain. We rode four and a half miles up the road and it was pouring just as we pulled in and my stomach dropped – another dive. And there was no other place to go.
Gerry checked in while I stood out with the bike under the overhang and the rain poured down in buckets. The lightning and thunder rolled in along with the wind.
As I was opening the room door, I said, “I’m not expecting much.” And it was a good thing. Old, faded bedspreads on double beds, chipped furniture. But it didn’t smell of smoke and it was dry, so that was good.
We got the trailer off and the door closed, Gerry sat down on the bed and I sat on the chair and we just looked at each other.
We talked for a bit about the situation. We've been thinking that we can get a decent room for about $55-$60 and that's just not going to happen anymore. When we were back at the grocery store, Gerry saw a Fairfield and a Hampton Inn but decided not to check with them because he knew they would be over $100. Now we know that's what we're going to have to do if we don't want to end up on dumps like this anymore.

I cleaned the bike, lubed it, then took a shower. Then I journaled while Gerry took a shower. When he came out he said it was good to stand under the shower and get his attitude adjusted.
I’ve been enjoying the actual riding, but I’m so tired of the rain and trying to outsmart it every day, and wondering where we’re going to spend the night.
Gerry fixed dinner - noodles, tuna, spuds. That and some M&Ms was our dinner. And there's no place here to get anything else.

I was just sitting here and noticed a huge cobweb in the corner right by th ebed, complete with a gigantic spider. Sigh.
It rained all evening with lightning.
Soggy,
Gerry and Pat
