Looking at those numbers, you KNOW something was up today. It was the wind! At our back! For most of 92.9 miles! We can safely say we've never had a tailwind for that long of a distance. It was pretty incredible.
We left at 6:25, wanting to get a good chunk of miles under our belt before everyone else woke up to share the road with us. Besides, it's nice and cool then. We saw last night that the wind was supposed to start in the night and, sure enough, it was nice and brisk when we left town. It was a south wind and were going straight north.
It was a beautiful morning...
It was a beautifully flat road....(The anticipated "sketchy" road turned out to be better than we thought.)
It was a beautiful wind....can you see how the grass is bending over?
We couldn't believe how quickly the miles passed beneath us. Before we knew it, we were texting our friends in Junction City, "You're not going to believe this, but we're only18 miles out. Can we show up early?" We had thought we'd get there mid-afternoon, but here it was well before noon.
That's when the road angled to the northeast. Oh my, things changed. It was still kind of behind us but it also hit us at the side. Some of those gusts would blow us right toward the middle of the road. A couple times I felt like I was on a carnival ride! Thankfully, almost all the drivers today were very courteous and gave us plenty of space. We were glad that stretch was only about three miles.
Then it turned north and were off again. Wahoo!
Just before Junction City, this is what the bike computer read... yes, just ready to turn over to our first 1000 miles! One third of the way through.
This flag as we came into town also gives an indication of the wind velocity.
About the time we get up on our high horse, God has a great way of yanking us out of the saddle: Hills. Good steep ones, right at the end. Right up to our friend's doorway. Thank you, Lord.
Chris and Rachel and their kids were so gracious to welcome us into their home, even though we were WAY early, even though they were in the middle of cleaning, even though we needed a shower and a nap. Thanks so much for your hospitality and for letting us wash all our clothes!
Tomorrow will most likely be a much different day as we turn west for a time and the winds are supposed to totally switch and come from the northwest. Oh well, we had today and it was wonderful.
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY to all you dads tomorrow!
Pat,
Gerry says it's my prescription steroids (for my ears) that powered me today!
I'm sticking with God's power! ;o)

(Rachel is the daughter of Bill and Sandy, who drove us to Galveston.)
