Last evening, we got to meet Chris and Rachel's neighbors when they dropped by for a few minutes. Wonderful people and we so enjoyed visiting with them. Later, before bedtime, Robert showed up at the door and handed us an envelope with a check for the scholarship fund!
During the night a nice storm moved through Junction City dumping almost 3/4" of rain and blowing down branches. Sometime in the night there was a bird yakking outside the window. Or maybe it was a frog. Or a bird with a frog in its throat. I don't know. Whatever it was, it was probably begging to get in out of the rain.
By the time we left at 7:19 the roads were dried off. It was about 62 degrees, the coolest temp we've had the whole trip. It felt great as we headed west to where "it gets flatter", as we had been told. Uh, I hate to break it to you, but it's NOT flatter out there.

Beautiful, yes, flatter, no. This is pretty much what we rode west for 15 miles......with the wind....in our faces. Well, except for the 24 miles when we turned north on hwy15. There were still hills but the grades were longer and gentler.
We stopped at a nice little park in Clay Center for a lunch break. A young mom with three little ones approached us and asked about our trip. She said she knows how important a good shower and a hot meal are and asked if we needed those. As Gerry was replying, "Oh, thank you, but we're doing okay", inside I was shouting, "YES, WE WOULD LOVE A GOOD SHOWER AND HOT MEAL! CAN YOU TAKE US HOME WITH YOU RIGHT NOW?!" But I restrained as I took another bite of my bagel and peanut butter and wiped the sweat from my forehead. It was awfully nice of her to offer, don't you think?
Another 29 miles west on hwy 24 were pretty much a repeat of the first 15.
We reached Concordia at 3:20, stopped at Wal-Mart, then collapsed into an air conditioned room. (It had steadily gotten warmer and warmer as the day wore on.) Ahh, now we got our good shower and hot meal. (We actually had turkey and gravy and potatoes, and fresh carrots, a nice change from the pasta/tuna.)
Gerry's working on a spiritual analogy for yesterday and today concerning life in the Spirit and persevering.
In addition to the hills and wind, we gained 275 feet in elevation today.
A "convoy" of grain combines passed us today on their way to some farm. It's hard to believe they're harvesting some things here already.
We've decided that we like the roads that have a rumble strip that runs down the middle. We can hear when vehicles move over into the other lane which lets us relax sooner, knowing they're not going to pass by too closely.
The pain du jour: Gerry is experiencing a severe shin splint in his right leg. It's quite painful with each stroke. He checked the Mayo Clinic website to see what to do for shin splints. Hmmm, ice - check; rest - nope; change of exercise - nope. Prayer - check.
Prayer needs:
- Gerry's shin splint
- It's supposed to get very warm tomorrow (high 90s) as we head into Nebraska.
We can't tell you enough how much we covet and appreciate your prayer on our behalf. Day after day. Thank you.
Pat

The flag on the court house in Clay Center was enjoying the wind that was antagonizing us.

This is typically what one does not like to see where one is riding, as it likely indicates it is usually WINDY there.
We were very tired when we reached hwy 81 and turned north for the last 14. Thankfully, this was a four lane (with a great wide shoulder) with grades that were much less severe.
