Day 23 Day off in Norfolk, NE

I can't believe we slept until 8:00. Oh no, that might mean I won't be able to take a nap this afternoon!

After breakfast we spent some time in prayer together, thankful for our Father's loving care for us, our family, our friends.

Then we went for a walk over to the little mall and to pick up something from Target (the first one we've seen). It was amazing what the rain storm did last night - like it washed all the humidity and heat out of the air. 72 degrees and a slight breeze....felt like home. (Well, except that Bozemanites are about to grow frosty webbed feet right now.) This was much different from what was forecast.

Oh look there, it's a Sonic drive in. And they have half price shakes today. I guess we might as well stop for brunch. Ok, ok, I confess we already knew it was there; we saw it yesterday when we rolled into town. And we already knew the shakes were on sale. We've been seeing the signs at every Sonic we've passed for days and days: "All shakes half price June 19".
You might not believe it, but this is the first milkshake I've had in probably 30 years. I don't typically eat ice cream at home, let alone a milkshake. (Monica, it was chocolate hazelnut...that's like liquid NUTELLA!! Mmmmm)

Late afternoon we walked to the Applebees about a half mile away for an early dinner. We had brought a gift card with us and this seemed like a good time to use it to load up on carbs and protein for the next few days.

This evening we Skyped for a few minutes with our grandkids in Montana. Oh, I wanted to just reach through and smoosh them with hugs and kisses! I miss them so much. M sang "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "The B-I-B-L-E" for us and J was all over the place like a very healthy one year old. It was great.

There was a lady in the computer room where we were skyping who was trying to rearrange her belongings. She told Gerry that she could not get a room in Omaha because the College Baseball World Series is going on there. She said $79 rooms are renting for $479!  She couldn't get a room here either because of the overflow from Omaha and all the people here for the tornado aftermath. We look at all that and see what God did in having a room for us for these two nights.

The Day-Off Digest of "stuff":

1) We woke up to our 6th flat this morning at mile 1287.2. Now that .2 is important because if it had been .0 or .1 that means we would have been either changing it along the busy street in the sun or walking it the last one or two tenths of a mile. But, once again God was gracious to allow us to make it all the way here.

It was the rear tire, which takes the most abuse because of my weight over it and the weight of Bob resting on it. And looking at all the rough shoulder we've been riding, it's no real surprise to be flat again.

While changing it, Gerry saw that the tire was quite worn so he changed out the tire also, not just the tube.
This is a satellite picture of a section of road we'll be on tomorrow. Each one of those dark lines that spans the shoulders is a crack with an abrupt edge of 1-3". This particular section has them quite close together.

2) Silver Streak is beginning to show some weariness. The bar tape on his front handle bars is working loose. Somewhere he threw off a bar end cap so he is now sporting a duct tape replacement. We had to bungee the trunk pack on yesterday because the Velcro straps weren't holding.

3) When we got to Chris and Rachel's last Saturday, Rachel allowed me to do laundry. When I was taking our clothes out of the stuff sack to wash, this is how I found Gerry's shorts.
????????
It's a mystery. He had just worn them the day before when we were in El Dorado. We were hoping that he didn't walk that 4.5 miles to the post office with this...!

4) I'm up to chapter five of Romans in my memory review. Gerry is almost through chapter two of Philippians.

5) It's been a little sad to see the different disaster and insurance vehicles around here as we know they're here for the tornado victims of Pilger.

6) We haven't had a tornado watch/warning for a couple days now, which has been kind of nice.

Tomorrow should be our last day in Nebraska as we head for Yankton, SD.

"The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore."    Psalm 121:8

In His care,
Pat
